Tioman Island or Pulau Tioman
is off the east coast of Malaysia. Tioman is located 32km from Mersing. A
ferry from Mersing to Pulau Tioman takes less than 2 hours or faster by
speedboat. Tioman is an island paradise with white sandy beaches surrounded by blue waters and coral reefs perfect for snorkeling or scuba diving. At different times of the year it is possible to see Whale Sharks. Other marine life include manta rays, sea turtles and dolphins. Tioman Island was the location of the 1958 movie South Pacific. The island has the very distinct twin peaks mountain at the southern end of the island.
Many of the coral reefs close the resorts are in poor condition because of the many boats that anchor there. Away from the resort areas you can find some great reefs teeming with marine life. The waters around Tioman are a Marine Park and located on the western coast of Tioman there is a marine enclosure with nets which allows you to swim surrounded by thousands of fish of different species.
Monitor Lizard Throughout Tioman Island you may see some of the local inhabitants - very large monitor lizards. The ones found around the resorts are well fed so not a problem with tourists. There are also a number of species of snakes though all are non-venomous. These include the Reticulate Python, Oriental whip snake and tree snakes. There a plenty of fishing trips you can do from Tioman Island including reef fishing and Deep sea fishing trips. You can either go on an organised trip or befriend a local fisherman and go out on one of their long boats fishing. There is nothing better than bringing your fresh fish back from your fishing trip and throw them straight on the BBQ.
PADI dive centres With over 20 dive locations around Tioman Island, this is a great place to come and dive or even learn how to dive. There are a number of qualified PADI dive centres who can organise dive trips or train PADI dive courses. The best time to dive is between February and November. December and January, during the monsoon season the visibility is limited. Tioman Dive Centre is located within the Swiss Cottage Resort in Tekek village. Leisure dives start from RM95 (US$ ) or RM80 per dive if you are doing 5 or more www.tioman-dive-centre.com Bali Hai Divers is located in Panuba Bay www.balihaidivers.net
