LANGKAWI ISLAND TRAVEL GUIDE
Langkawi Island is one of the most beautiful tropical islands in Malaysia. Located off the north east coast of Malaysia, close to the border with Thailand.
Langkawi is the perfect holiday destination with direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Singapore. There are heaps of water sports activities and lots of nature to enjoy. Whether you are looking for an exciting family holiday or just some time out to sit back and relax, then Lankgawi should be on your holiday destination list.
As well as the spectacular white sandy beaches Langakawi, excellent reefs for snorkeling and scuba diving there are also forest to explore in the middle of the island with many beautiful waterfalls.
The jungles on Langkawi have a variety of wildlife including the long-tail Macaques monkeys and red giant flying squirrels. There is also a diverse range of birds with many bird watching tours available for your chance to see the grey-faced buzzards, mountain eagle, hummingbirds, kingfishers and 3 different species of hornbills. The mammals found in the jungles of Langkawi include the long-tailed macaques and dusky-leaf monkeys, also known as the spectacled langur.
Pantai Cenang Langkawi
Pantai Cenang (Cenang Beach) is the main tourist towns on Langkawi island with loads of hotels, beach resorts, restaurants and bars and family activities.
Cenang Beach is a long stretch of beautiful white sand. There are loads of water sports you can enjoy at Cenang Beach including parasailing, kayaking, jet skiing. You can do a jetski tour that takes you out around some of the islands just off the coast of Cenang Beach - check out MegaWaterSports.
If you walk along the beach at Cenang, there are plenty of companies setup on the sand with equipment to rent.
One of the most popular tourist attractions at Cenang Beach is Under Water World. UnderWater World is a large aquarium with loads of different tropical fish on display. There are over 500 different species and they also have a very good display of African penguins. Great for children plus all the family. Check out UnderWater World website.

Cable Car to the top of Langkawi
For the best view over Langkawi then you have to ride the cable car to the top of the mountain, known as SkyCab. The Langkawi Cable Car is located around 25 minutes by car from Cenang Beach and takes you up 700 meters above sea level with a great observation deck with great views down to the beaches of Langkawi and across the jungle.
Right at the top of the mountain is also SkyBridge which is a huge walk way suspended in the sky also giving great views down over Langkawi.
Check out more about the Langkawi Cable Car.
Waterfalls on Langkawi
There are a few nice waterfalls on Langkawi Island.
Just a few kilometers from the bottom of SkyCab cable car is Seven Wells Waterfall. The best time to visit this waterfall is during the wet season when there is heaps of water falling. Unfortunately during the dry season (peak tourist season) the waterfall is just a trickle.
There is a large steep hill you need to walk up, around 10 minute walk to get to this waterfall so if you are elderly or less mobile this may be too difficult.
Scuba Diving and Snorkeling Langkawi
The waters around Langkawi island are perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. Warm waters, around 29 degrees all year round, crystal clear and teaming with a huge variety of marine life.
The best scuba diving is done at the Pulau Payar Marine Park which is around a small island (Pulau Payar) which is located around 30 minutes by speedboat south east of Langkawi.
There are not alot of scuba dive shops on Langkawi though I can recommend East Marine that operate out of the Royal Langkawi Yatch Club in Kuah.

Restaurants in Langkawi
If you love your food then you will love the choice of restaurants on Langkawi. Like the rest of Malaysia there is a really good mix of restaurant types. Ofcourse there is plenty of good local Malaysian food and there are plenty of other international restaurants including a good selection of Indian Restarants, Chinese Restaurants, Mexican and Italian food including great pizza and there is also a good representation of Middle Eastern food.
Ofcourse Cenang Beach is the place to come if you want to roam around and check out all the restaurants. The main street of Cenang is lined with all sorts of different food.
If you are still craving a bit of fast food then Cenang Beach can also help you with a choice of Subway, McDonald's and KFC. And for after a late night of drinking there are a few late night food stalls selling tasty kebabs!

There is a great range of accommodation in Langkawi to suit all budget types. There are plenty of cheap budget hotels and even more luxury beach resorts. Even with the luxury the prices are still very reasonble as most things in Langkawi are very cheap.
One of the best beach resorts to stay in is the Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort (pictured to the right) located at Cenang Beach. Room prices at the Meritus are under $200 per night with excellent facilities.
